We live just outside the limits of Martinsville, Virginia, the home of NASCAR racing’s oldest and most iconic half-mile track. While the popular racing events twice each year bring lots of people and revenue to the city, the decline of the once vibrant furniture and textile industry in this region of America has made it a challenge to sustain local small businesses. However, on a recant walk-about downtown I was pleased to see how city planners had transformed a once dark alleyway between two parallel streets into a pleasant walk-through that has become a top spot for photographers like me.
